A (Orthodontist): Clear aligners are excellent for mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and relapse cases. They fail for complex biomechanics: severe deep bites, impacted canines, significant rotations (>45 degrees), and extrusion movements. For those, traditional braces with brackets and wires are still superior. Also, patient compliance is critical—22 hours/day wear or treatment fails.
B (Orthodontic Researcher): The technology is improving rapidly. New features like SmartForce attachments (composite bumps), Power Ridges, and precision cuts for elastics expand the envelope. 3D-printed aligners with variable thickness (thicker for force, thinner for comfort) are entering the market. AI-driven treatment planning (e.g., Dental Monitoring, uLab) can predict tooth movement more accurately and reduce refinements.
